Cute & Smart Advertising

The Cincinnati Zoo is smart. They've posted many videos on YouTube showing their cute and furry baby animals. They do of course have adult animals that live at the zoo, but aren’t baby animals just adorable? Even when you visit their website the first thing you see are videos and pictures of the babies and all of the sweet laughable “awww!” moments that they do. This clever advertising not only captures the adult audience for giving them the warm fuzzy feelings, but it draws in the little kids who will surely beg Mom, Dad, or any driving adult to rush them to see these cute little creatures.
In a world where social media now dominates the persuasion of what to do on a Sunday afternoon, the Cincinnati Zoo has shown that they can keep up in this fast pace marketing world. They know that putting up posters or commercials is not just enough anymore. It’s important to have their website with videos linked to YouTube. Not only are the videos cute but they each have some sort of educational fact written below to describe exactly what you’re seeing.
With the video posted above its mentioned that dogs are actually great play companions for Cheetahs. What they zoo will do then is get a puppy to match with one of their babies so that the two animals can grow up together as play mates. In the video we see that both animals love wrestling and running, so it’s easy to understand the logic of pairing these two animals together. Not only did I learn something new, but awwww isn’t this video just adorable? To the Zoo!

  1. I had never thought of these kind of videos as marketing for the zoo but it is true. It made me want to go see the rest of the animals. It is a great video to lighten your mood.

  2. I love that you chose a video with adorable animals. I have such a soft spot for animals. Your analysis is very persuasive and convinces me that this zoo is a great way to spend free time. Thank-you.

  3. Dawww. look at the little things! I like that your video itself is working with social media based advertising, as I'm sure this is going to be a poignant part of our course. Also, you have a very readable writing style. Is this the Aristolean analysis? The writing could use a bit more logos on your side, but i get your point. They want you to come to the zoo, and baby animals make you come to the zoo.

  4. You make a very astute observation that this "awww" video is actually a great piece of marketing.

In terms of the Aristotelean part of the assignment, you bring in a sense of audience well (that'd be YOU!) and address the idea of the rhetor. We could use a bit more about the context (what's going on in the world that makes zoo PR important?) along with Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.

Also...ne thought I'm posing to everyone: how would this video affect an skeptical audience? That is, the best arguments can win people over to their points of view; your analysis presumes an audience that's already open and willing to absorb the ideas...but how effectively would the video appeal to an audience whose opening stance is "This is malarkey"? (just something to ponder!)
